Beautiful Italy and today's rainbow

After 5 weeks in Los Angeles, I realize just how beautiful living in the countryside is: Italy!

There are loads of things to appreciate about Los Angeles, the city I grew up in, but today, when I spotted a rainbox in my rear view mirror, and stopped at a gas station to take a picture, I realized once again how being surrounded by all this green, and all these rolling hills....what good it does to ones soul.

Right after snapping this shot, I drove on, to see the hills, covered in green and gold, every so often with patches of bright light hitting here and there, almost magically. The clouds let some of the sun shine through and these magical spots glowed with magical beauty. It was breathtaking! Impossible to take a picture because I was driving, but I was totally amazed at how gorgeous the scene was.

Here is a shot of the rainbow...
and a couple others I was able to take
before getting onto the highway.

Italy is really a beautiful place!

My photography in IL CORPO SOLITARIO of Giorgio Bonomi

"Il corpo solitario, volume 2" (self portraits in contempory art)
is a collection of hundreds of self-portrait photographs created by international photographers. Giorgio Bonomi, art critic and author of this second volume, has gathered a vast and rich selection of the most varied works showing both photographs in  color and black and white.
and includes  a review of each artist and a brief description of his work.

The 369 page book was produced by Rubbettino Editor (www.rubbettino.it).

Here is the review of my work included in the book.
Above is one of the several photographs of mine that is published.

Translation of test of Giorgio Bonomi, art critic and author of
“Il corpo solitario: volume 2” (The solitary figure, volume 2)
Stephanie Seymour, American,  who has lived in Perugia, Italy for many years, obtains “classic” effects with veils and double exposures, and not just by chance. A painter, she arrives later to photography,  but her previous experience facilitates the  optimization of her photographic results that with their contrasts of light and color offer  fascinating results to the observer.  Her appearance appears discreet, almost shy,  photographed with soft lighting or double exposures as if to reiterate, once again, Pirandello’s “one,  nobody and a hundred thousand”.  An ironic and witty personality, the artist in self-portraits although wrapped/dressed in improbable clothing, looks serious and thoughtful, confident of the depth of this research.

During the last year there has been a lot of attention given to a page on Facebook, Umbra-Una-Foto-al-Giorno (Umbria, one photo each day).

Photographers have posted photographs taken in the Umbrian regione, from stunning panoramas to details of typical scenes in the towns of Perugia, Norcia, Trasimeno Lake, etc.

Hundreds if not thousands of photographs were posted, and a selection of the best of these photographs, 365 of them, were presented at Perugia at Sant'Anna Church a couple of months ago.

Now, the final book of these words, plus one photograph making them 366 has been published and presented just yesterday, Dec 17, 2016 at the stunning Nun Relais Spa in Assisi, during a presentation of the event in which all proceeds of the book will go to the people who have recently lost everything during the earthquake in the area of Norcia.

The following are some photographs from both the presentation at Sant'Anna months ago, and yesterday's presentation in Assisi. Here also is my photograph taken on the stairway of the Acquadotto in Perugia of a bicyclist who I caught while he courageously pedaled downwards on this famous landmark of Perugia.

Super Moon

Last night I had a super time photographing the super moon from Perugia's historical city centre.
But first I photographed it as I drove up to the center.
Here is one of the photographs taken from right under the University for Foreigners.

The Olympics, China, and my father

I am particular fond of China, have several personal reasons for this, as well as having had extraordinary experiences when there.
My first trip in 2007.....I had bought a little Olympus camera and took many photographs of the people there. When I arrived back to Italy where I live, I had my first photography show with the photos of this trip entitled "Incontri ravviCINAti", close (Chinese) encounters.

When we stayed in Dalian China for six weeks, I stopped people and took close-up photos of them. It was quite an experience, a very moving one.

But also, I was lucky to be able to photograph all the Olympic sports in magnificent sculptures in a huge plaza in the city of Dalian. Here are just a few on this post.

The Olympics are also in my heart....my father was an silver medalist winner as a javelin thrower in the 1948 Olympics in London.
A curious note, when I discovered that Missoni, famous Italian designer has also been in the Olympics that year (I had read it in the newspaper) I wrote to him personally asking if he had met my father (my dad died years ago). He never wrote to me but I got the surprise of a PHONECALL from him where he burst out with "Sono MISSONI!!" It was a delightful conversation, and on his part, a very nice gesture. Perhaps that is the Olympic way.....

So, here my photos also contain the javelin sculpture.

I have a full collection of all of the sports, and they are magnificent larger than life sculptures.

WHAT AN ORIGINAL GIFT....THE MOON!!

A dear person, a very kind friend called me this evening.
"I have a gift to give you"
"But haven't you already given me many gifts?" I asked her
"No, this is a different kind of gift. Go to your window and look out. The gift is the moon, the MOON. IT IS SMILING AT YOU TONIGHT!"
So...I went to the window, went out of the terrace and this is what I saw.

Now, isn't that the most simple wonderful gift!! A smiling moon!
Thank you dear friend, this is what makes life wonderful. Just remembering another person.
Just a simple moon.
And a little smile.

The Lady in Red

Lady in Red
My trip to China was much more than just a trip to China.
It was my very first experience in photographing people without being able to comunicate with them, without speaking their language. It was a daily experience, stopping people and asking them if I could take
 their photo, using sign language.
This woman has a particular significant value to me, because she just seemed to pose in a public bathroom, making me realize what an opportunity I had to photograph people, IF I smiled at them, and got my message across in a nice way, AND if they in turn smiled back, wanting to pose for me.
This lovely woman really was happy to pose and I am very happy about this photo, also for the memory of the moment I had taking it.
Photography is wonderful. People are wonderful too.

"Old World, New Art - A Valley Girl in Italy"
The Coffee Fix, Studio City, Los Angeles, California
Oct 20 - Nov 23, 2012

"Sunday in the Park"
A paper dress created in the colorful woods near my home in Perugia, Italy

 "Dancing Trees"
Olive trees often take on life-like forms, like these two outside of Perugia in the countryside.

"Cousins"
A friend once owned about 30 cats, in a town outside of Perugia.
Here are five of the ones who live outdoors.

"Sea of Wheat"
After a huge storm, this field of wheat was crushed by the rain,
creating what seems to be a swarm of swimming fish.

"Blue Gondola"
Gondolas are still used, though not as often as in the past, but
still are magnificent to see on the canals of Venice, Italy.

"Butta Giù la Pasta"
In a popular restaurant in Perugia, you can eat homemade
tagliatelle, and watch the cooks at work.

"Il Padrino"
A magnificent restaurant where fish is the specialty, and where all
cooking can be easily viewed in this particular open-kitchen at "Il Padrino".
